comundo customer case: Heimstaden Denmark.

Quote: How Heimstaden Denmark simplified their energy data collection with comundo

The background

Heimstaden Bostad, one of Europe’s largest real estate companies with more than 160,000 residential homes across nine different European countries, is one of the first major European real estate companies to commit to the Science Based Targets initiative (STBi).

They’re committed to reducing absolute Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions covering leased assets by 42% by 2030 from a 2020 base year. A very ambitious target that requires accurate insights into portfolio performance.

“comundo can deliver energy data, Scope 1, 2 and 3 on actual consumption from tenants across the entire portfolio, and combine this with the local emission factors.”

In addition to strategic sustainability goals, Heimstaden Bostad is also subject to the infamous CSRD’s demands. So all in all they have their work cut out for them!

The problem

As Denmark's largest private residential landlord – with approximately 20,000 housing units that vary across new and old builds, student housing, apartments in multi-story buildings, townhouses, single-family homes and several commercial leases spread across the country – the size and diversity of the portfolio makes it difficult to collect and ensure a high quality of energy data.

Some of the main issues when gathering data were:

  • Manual and time-consuming data collection from many different utility companies
  • Missing actual energy consumption data from tenants (Scope 3)
  • Manual and time-consuming data processing with reporting in an Excel template

The solution

Previously, data was reported every quarter and took roughly two weeks to complete, but because of the increasing demand for access to valid quality data to navigate a complex real estate market, the data is now needed every month.

“It could have taken us about two weeks of full-time work to fetch all the energy data manually. Now it takes less than a day.”

Since using comundo, Heimstaden has been able to save a significant amount of time on energy data collection and deliver high-quality monthly insights to all the relevant stakeholders.

“comundo provides us with all the energy data we need without having to use multiple services, which was a big factor when deciding to go with their solution.”

It’s worth noting that Heimstaden is a value-driven company that operates with a shared set of values across all its markets, inspired by its Scandinavian roots – Dare, Care, and Share.

While looking for a solution, it became clear that comundo also emphasises strong, relatable values, which was something that resonated with them.

“On top of solving our need for accessible data across multiple data providers, it has been a joy to work with the good people at comundo in the integration process.”
